Custom Handrail

Andrew Chavet | Private Client, London 2023

This bespoke European oak curved handrail was crafted for a staircase in an Edinburgh townhouse. The design features a traditional ‘mop stick’ profile, securely fixed to the balusters using stainless steel brackets and Zipbolts.

To achieve the smooth, seamless curves, a ‘flip-mill’ CNC process was employed. This technique involves overlapping top and bottom machining operations at the midpoint of the timber, with the pieces held in place by sprues revealed during the final pass. To ensure precise alignment of the machining operations, a custom jig was also created, perfectly matching the dimensions of the stock.
